Abstract: Wells argues that pronunciation dictionaries should indicate syllable boundaries to provide information about allophonic variation. We show that this is unnecessary, all the details needed to condition allophony are derivable from morpheme boundaries. We also show that, besides being unnecessary, the syllabification algorithm Wells offers is arbitrary, indeterminate, and inconsistent.
